In line with SDG Target 17.14 on policy see in April 2022, UCC\'s Energy Policy and Modelling Group (EPMG) was requested to undertake energy systems modelling analysis to inform the development of Sectoral Emissions Ceilings as part of the National Government’s carbon budgeting programme. This work took place under phase I of the CAPACITY (Climate Action Pathways &Absorptive Capacity) project, part of the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications. The next phase will be supported by €3.5m in funding which has been awarded to UCC by the Govt. to provide energy modelling analysis over the next 5years. In line with SDG target 15.1 on conservation, UCC\'s ECHOES (Effect of climate change on bird habitats around the Irish Sea) seeks to address how climate change will impact coastal bird land habitats of the Irish Sea, and what effect this could have on our society, economy, and shared ecosystems. In line with SDG target 15.5 All habitats on campus were surveyed in detail and assessed for their conservation value when producing the university biodiversity action plan. This includes an assessment for the identification of habitats and species of conservation importance e.g. Species protected under the Irish Wildlife Act or EU Habitats Directive Annex I Habitats and Annex II and IV Species, including bryophytes, vascular plants, birds and mammals such as bats and otters which are also protected species under Irish Law. A Number of protected bat species were found to roost and forage on UCC campus and the Biodiversity Action Plan sets out a plan to conserve and enhance their habitats, roots and populations. UCC also owns the land on which Fota Wildlife Park is situated and has a longstanding research and educational outreach programme with the Park regarding conservation of species that are globally endangered.

Life on Land Water quality standards and guidelines for water discharges Yes

In line with SDG target 14.1 on water pollution& ecosystems, All water effluent from UCC is discharged under license to the municipal sewer network for treatment by Irish Water, the national service provider. UCC is fully compliant with license requirements. At the wastewater treatment facility wastewater undergoes an 8-step process. During this eight step process all solid materials are removed, the water is biologically treated, nutrients are removed and pH is neutralised. All treated wastewater must then go through a quality control process to meet Environmental Protection Agency standards prior to be discharged to the sea. Life Below Water Support or organise events aimed to promote conservation and sustainable use of bodies of water Yes

In line with SDG target 14.2, 14.5 & 14.7, The Port of Cork Authority is collaborating with the UCC MaREI Centre to deliver an educational initiative around marine litter. Themed ‘Maintaining a Healthy Harbour’ the initiative aims to make school children aware of marine litter and the detrimental effects it can have on our oceans, harbour and shorelines. In August 2022, over 200 people attended the annual Heritage Week Touch Tanks event on the North Shore of the Lough Hyne Marine Nature Reserve near Skibbereen. This highly popular event run by the Lough Hyne Research Team, from the ERI, MaREI and School of BEES in association with the Skibbereen Heritage Centre, was led by Prof Rob McAllen along with Dr Mark Jessopp, Luke Harman, Hannah Brownlow and Prof Ruth Ramsay. In line with SDG target 14.1 on water pollution& ecosystems, All water effluent from UCC is discharged under license to the municipal sewer network for treatment by Irish Water, the national service provider. UCC is fully compliant with license requirements. At the wastewater treatment facility wastewater undergoes an 8-step process. During this eight step process all solid materials are removed, the water is biologically treated, nutrients are removed and pH is neutralised. All treated wastewater must then go through a quality control process to meet Environmental Protection Agency standards prior to be discharged to the sea.
